Breitling Replicas celebrate 50 years of THE NAVITIMER

In celebration of the 50th birthday of the Breitling Navitimer, the watch company decided to commemorate with a bang. He watch remained popular for 5 decades and in 2002 they released a special edition Navitimer. The dial was added a vintage logo which had 2 stylized aircraft but for majority of its design, Eddy Schopfer paid attention to the original styling including the subdials and the slide rule. Because of the modularly structured movement (self winding) from Debois Depraz, you could see the 30 elapsed minutes at 9 and the running seconds at 3. Its balance ran at 28,800 vph. The movement had gone through an official chrono test before being fitted in a 41mm case. You could choose from yellow gold, stainless steel and white gold.

History of Breitling Navitimer starts in 1952

The name of this watch was not inspired by the navy. The Breitling Navitimer which debuted in 1952 and it was created to help pilots coordinate navigation and time through its calculating functions. It was powered by the Caliber Venus 178 and it’s pretty much a personal on-board instrument. It had a slide rule built in to enable aviators to divide and multiply easily, calculate averages, convert nautical miles to land miles, compute the fuel consumption, distances during landing and ascent as well as average gain of altitude. It has undergone many modifications since its inception and most of these changes were focused on the case and calibers. However its circular slide rule remains part of the Navitimer and has never been tampered with.

Breitling Pilot’s Chronograph (1954)

In 1954, Breitling introduced a whole new Pilot’s Chronograph and it was different from the Chronomat and the Navitimer in so many ways. First of all, the styling of the dial and case was very simple – no fuss. And its main priority was readability. There were large luminous numerals on the black dial and the window at 3 showed a digital counter that could count 15 elapsed minutes. The date was absent in this window. It has a rotating bezel which is calibrated for twelve hours so you can set the time quickly if you’re in another timezone or to set reminders. The firm used the Caliber Venus 178 which is hand wound and it eventually evolved into the Co-Pilot.

Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute (1962)

The steel Navitimer Cosmonaute was worn by no less than astronaut Scott Carpenter aboard Aurora 7 which went around the Earth 3 times after they were carried on a rocket that flew into space on May 24, 1962. It was equipped with the Caliber Venus 178 which was specially modified for Breitling. It had an hour hand that needed 24 hours to finish one circuit of the dial, and this was crucial to distinguish night from day. The modified hours display didn’t affect the practical slide rule which is great for conversions. The Navitimer enabled the navigation plans drafting and helped to compute the fuel consumption and when the next radio call should be. It also determined the direction or location of travel. This watch was a very helpful instrument for pilots.
